HEMATOLOGY

is a research division that deals with diseases of blood-forming organs such as spleen and bone marrow, as well as blood diseases. Hematology, a sub-branch of the Department of Internal Medicine, primarily investigates disorders as benign (non-cancer) and malignant in two classes. Examples of mild conditions include anemia, bone marrow dysfunction, sickle cell anemia, Mediterranean anemia (thalassemia), multiple myeloma, bleeding and coagulation problems, thrombocytopenia and lymph node swelling. Malignant disorders may be categorized as blood tumors or leukemias. Hematology, as in many areas of medicine, is a branch that needs a multidisciplinary approach.

Both diseases that exist in this system are referred to as blood diseases. Any of the diseases that hematology deals with can be described as follows:

Disturbances in the development of blood cells or hemoglobin caused by disorders such as anemia, thrombocytopenia and leukopenia.

Accelerated loss of blood cells that leads to diseases such as hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenic purpura (iTP).

Blood cell dysfunction that causes diseases such as sickle cell anemia

Coagulation disorders such as von Willebrand and hemophilia

Blood clotting of the circulatory system such as pulmonary thromboembolism, thrombosis and thrombophlebitis

Cancer of bone marrow cells and lymph node cells responsible for the development of blood, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma

How are Blood Disorders diagnosed?

In order to identify hematological disorders, a thorough history and physical examination should be carried out first. The laboratory tests and radiological imaging as deemed necessary by the physician shall be carried out in the light of the findings. Laboratory tests are commonly used to measure the amount of blood cells and hemoglobin, complete blood count, hemoglobin subtype analysis, blood tests defined as peripheral microscopy, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, vitamin B12 testing, iron and folic acid levels, coagulation testing, and functional blood cell analysis. Analysis of proteins formed by immune system cells.
